Care Sheet: Floating Frog (Occidozyga lima)

Common Name: Floating Frog, Puddle Frog, and Rice Paddy Frog.

Scientific Name: Occidozyga lima.

Distribution: South eastern Asia: China, Thailand, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Size: 4cm.

Life expectancy: 2-3 years.

Colouration: Mottled grey-brown or olive-brown with a single light dorsal stripe.

Requirements: These small semi-aquatic frogs live best as a group, a 15-gallon tank would be adequate for a group of 6-8 adults. These Frogs can be maintained in a semi-aquatic set-up, with a base substrate of gravel or sand slopped up at one end to provide a dry land area. Large pebbles, driftwood, cork bark and plants can be arranged to provide a number of hiding places. The water should be clean de-chlorinated or spring water at a depth of 3". The water will need to be filtered using a submersible power filter to avoid the build up of ammonia and bacteria in the water, and partial water changes should be carried out at regular intervals. It is also a good idea to lightly oxygenate the water with the use of an air-stone. The tank will require additional heating to 18-25°C. A fluorescent UVB tube can be used as a source of light. Once every two-three weeks the tank and its contents should be completely cleaned and sterilised using an amphibian / reptile friendly disinfectant.

Feeding: Floating Frogs should be fed daily with a mixture of suitably sized insects including Daphnia, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp, Tubifex, and whiteworm
